The Forgotten Delight

The seventh day did not become a burden because God is severe. It became a burden because men would rather manage holiness than receive it. We have been taught to treat the Sabbath as an obsolete shadow, a Jewish peculiarity, a rule for people who have not yet discovered grace. The Word says otherwise.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God.

The first instruction that trains a people

Before Sinai finished speaking, Israel had already been given the Sabbath in the manna. Six days it fell. On the sixth they gathered twice as much. On the seventh it did not fall, and they were told to stay in place. The seventh day is not an accessory to faith. It is the first rhythm by which a redeemed people learn that God is God — and they are not.

See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

Exodus 16:29 · KJV

Stay in place. Be still. That is not inactivity for its own sake. It is holy convocation with the Spirit of Creation. From sundown Friday to sundown Saturday the house is to rest — not as a punishment, and not as a loophole-hunt, but as a delight.

Grace did not retire the sign

The blood of the Lamb did not erase the Sabbath. It gave us power to keep it. The New Covenant writes the law on the heart; it does not strike the fourth word from the stone. If we love Him, we keep His commandments. The man who calls the seventh day optional has already begun to negotiate with the rest of the Word.

It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Exodus 31:17 · KJV

For ever is not a season. The sign still stands. Those who enter His rest do not do so by renaming Sunday, or by spiritualizing the day until nothing remains but a mood. They cease from their own works, as God did from His — on the day He blessed, sanctified, and named.

Call it a delight

Isaiah does not invite us to endure the Sabbath. He commands us to call it a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable. Turn your foot from it — from your errands, your commerce, your clever exceptions — and you will delight yourself in the Lord. That is the forgotten part. The day is not a wall. It is a table. The remnant who keep it are not trying to earn salvation. They are refusing to despise the gift.

Prepare the Sabbath while it is still day. Finish the work. Set the house in order. Then, when the sun goes down, stay in place. Greater is He that is in you. He is not in a hurry, and neither should you be.
